SNAP Payments Expected to Expire for 41 Million Amid Continuing Government Closure
Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that SNAP funds from a major federal support systems won't be issued in November amid the persistent government funding lapse.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The federal closure had reached three and a half weeks at the time of the statement, which followed calls from over 200 Congressional Democrats urging agriculture officials to utilize contingency funds to cover next month's benefits.
“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.
Millions Affected
Tens of millions of people depend on these monthly payments, per official statistics. Some regions, like New Mexico, use of SNAP is as high as one-fifth of the population.
Internal communications seen by journalists indicated that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Legislative Deadlock
Congressional leaders remain deadlocked regarding how to support and resume federal agencies.
A statement from the head of a prominent policy organization suggested that the administration could have acted to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.
“Officials were able and expected to acted earlier to get ready to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to support a spending bill that would resume government operations.
States Prepare
Governors in two affected states issued emergency declarations this week to allocate funds for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
