Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
