The Japanese Economy Contracts as Exports Face Impact by American Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has experienced a decline for the initial time in a year and a half, mainly driven by falling overseas shipments as a result of newly imposed American trade duties.
Group of Seven Economic Rankings
The Japanese economy stands as the first G7 country to announce an GDP decline in the previous quarter.
With the US yet to release its GDP data for Q3 2025, the present G7 growth leaderboard display:
- France: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
- United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
- Canada: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
- Germany: 0%
- Italy: no growth
- Japan: negative 0.4 percent
Tourism Stocks Slump during Political Rift with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is facing an escalating diplomatic tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japanese tourism and retail companies have fallen noticeably after China advised its residents to refrain from traveling to Japan.
This action by Beijing intensified a political dispute that was triggered by comments from Japan's recently appointed PM about the possibility of sending forces in the case of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation triggered a wave of selling across Japan's leisure stocks.
- Oriental Land shares dropped by 5.7%
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
- The national carrier fell by 3.75%
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and China's advisory advising against visits to Japan introduces short-term challenges for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services especially vulnerable."
Economic Contraction Breakdown
Japan's GDP declined by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as industrial exports were hit by tariffs imposed by the United States recently.
Exports were a key driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had threatened Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade deal.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8% in the quarter through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was stable in the first half of this year and today's GDP figures showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The White House has recently acknowledged the effect of tariffs on US consumers, lowering duties on food imports including meat, tomatoes, coffee and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
