The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Fan Response

It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.

“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
